Tromello to Pavia

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

Bicycles everywhere

An early start as we wanted to avoid the afternoon sun. We caught a bus then a coach to get to Tromello for 8.30. The town was pretty quiet but we managed to get a coffee and bought ourselves some emergency snacks.

Today's date: 10.9.20

Weather: cloudy and warm

Steps: 44,240

Distance: 30.58 km

Climbing: 77 m

The landscape today was still pancake flat but the route ran alongside much larger water channels and there were some big fish to be seen.

We stopped in Garlasco for a second coffee. It was a busy town with lots of people of all ages out and about. As in most towns lately, there were many people using bicycles to get around. There were also more recreational cyclists today, possibly as we are nearer to a city.

At noon we made it to Gropello Cairoli and stopped in a bar near the church. It had a strange chapel in the car park. No food was available so we walked on to a riverside bar in Canarazzo. No food was available there either so we sat and ate our emergency snacks watching the river.

The southern bank of the river Ticino is preserved as a woodland park that extends for perhaps 7 km from Pavia.

The via runs through this park and it is a pleasant way to approach the city. The river is wide and fast flowing with the occasional small boat.

We crossed into Pavia on the covered bridge. A sign on the bridge commemorates sometime resident Albert Einstein. Supper was lasagne at an organic food cafe while watching people pass. We strolled home through the centre of Pavia - it is really pretty and full of life. We treated ourselves to ice cream. In truth, we treat ourselves most evenings.

Don Bosco hostel

A second night at the hostel. I think we may be the only guests. It is simple, comfortable and great value.
