Che Bella Città
A rest day to explore Pavia. We caught the bus to Castello Visconteo to start our walking tour. The castle has a museum and an open-air cinema.
The University dominates this quarter of the City. We passed a graduation with students wearing laurels. The Piazza della Vittoria has many bars and restaurants and is the most touristy place in a non-touristy City.
We had lunch and caught the train 1 stop to Certosa.

Certosa di Pavia is a monastery built in the 15th century. It is extraordinary for the sheer amount of decoration and features it contains. There is no concept of 'less is more'. There was a very extensive tour provided by one of the monks who was was very prescriptive about what we could and could not photograph.
There are two cloisters. The monks live in houses around the larger cloister.
We caught the train back to Pavia and had a snack in a frullateria before restarting our walking tour.
Pavia has an extensive pedestrian-only area with cobbled streets and small passages. It was a great evening to explore and visit the many piazzas, Duomo and the beautiful Basilica Sant Teodore.
We had pizza for supper in a small backstreet restaurant and walked home.

There is a floodlit football pitch outside our window. On Thursdays they play until 11pm, but on Friday they finish at 10.
