Pogny to Vitry-le-Francois

Hyphenated

A sweltering and uncomfortable night so we were up and out early. We said goodbye to Lola and Happy and set off for a medium-length day.

Today's date: 28.7.20

Weather: cloudy and warm

Steps: 51,500

Distance: 36.07 km

Climbing: 1351 m

The morning was cool and we had a relaxed stroll along the valley. We had breakfast at La-Chausee-sur-Marne and lunch at Saint-Amand-sur-Fion. The villages we passed were pretty and full of flowers.

We passed huge fields of sunflowers and there were quite a variety of crops and animals. And giant haystacks.

Saint-Amand is a pretty village with a few shops and an open church. We got our passports stamped at the Mairie.

Some people in the village have unusual jobs. Jewellery grows on trees.

In the afternoon the trail ran out of the Fion valley back to the Marne across huge open fields.

The via took a big detour just to visit a cross, but the walk down into the Marne valley was pleasant. We stopped for a tea in Vitry-en-Perthois.

The waterways around Vitry-le-Francois are complex and interesting - you need to plan ahead to be on the right side of the river.

At one point we walked along a canal, over the river below. One of the canals here branches across to the Rhine.

Vitry looked interesting, but unfortunately our intended campsite in the town was closed so we couldn't linger. The core of the town follows a very regular grid pattern and there are big open squares.

We grabbed a tea/beer on the square, then some supplies from a supermarket and hiked on to a campsite out of town.

Campsite Le Nature - Luxemont-et-Villette

A small campsite. Not a lot of facilities but very cheap. Shower, food, blog, sleep.
