Peronne to Vraignes-en-Vermandois

Eau de Cologne

Woken up by rain. Not much ground to cover today so we strolled into town for breakfast waiting for the sun to come out and dry the tent.

Peronne is still a nice town with people and shops and things going on. The museum was closed but we got a stamp at the tourist office.

A queue at the boulangerie on the square.

We packed up, said goodbye to Christof, the helpful guy who runs the campsite and set off. The day warmed up but it stayed overcast with spots of rain all day.

The first part of the stage ran along an old railway near the river Cologne. The river was, of course, filled with ... stagnant swampy water with swarms of persistent mosquitoes.

Today's date: 15.7.20

Weather: cloudy

Steps: 29,040

Distance: 14.26 km

Climbing: 103 m

A picnic on the trail and then a climb out of the valley. The village of Cartigny had a closed church and a baguette vending machine.

We passed through the nice village of Bouvincourt-en-Vermandois. Villages here are strange, they look like dots on the map but often surprise by having lots of houses. They rarely have any facilities like a shop or bar.

Still lots of memorials and signs of the war. The protocol if you dig up a shell appears to be 'paint green and leave on side of the road'.

Camping des Hortensias

This is a working farm with a field providing tent and caravan pitches. There are friendly chickens and a very nervous dog.

We have a nice sheltered spot and there is even a kitchen to use. There is a parachute school nearby so we hear circling planes and can watch the parachutists descend.
