Lakeside
The plan today was to take advantage of the extensive and free transport. We left our heavy bags in the hotel and took the tram back to where we left the Via.

Today's date: 22.8.20
Weather: raining first thing, then sunny
Steps: 30,800
Distance: 16.21 km
Climbing: 178 m
It was grey and raining as we headed out of town. We walked down to the lakeside through the University campus and picked up the Via.
The Via sticks to the lakeshore for the next 50km. The path to the west of Lausanne is remarkably undeveloped. The houses are normal scale and many of their gardens meet the lake or are separated by a narrow path. Away from the lakeside, the hills are absolutely covered in small apartment blocks.
Everything is neat and tidy. There are lots and lots of 'do not' signs, forbidding all sorts of things, but the remarkable thing is that they are obeyed.
The sun came out and, as you would expect of a summer weekend, there was lots of activity on the lake and in all the varied parks. The facilities all look great - as you might expect from the home of the Olympic organisation.
We stopped in Ouchy for some acai bowls then walked on.
To the east of Lausanne the houses are grander, the trees bigger and the promenade wider.
All along the path there are small harbours filled with sailboats. Between the harbours there were parks and beaches with pontoons and swimming areas. There were lots of children and people of all ages out and about and there was a very agreeable vibe.
We had a couple of salads in Lutry and stopped the Garmin before heading back on the bus to the photography museum and on to the Cathedral.
The Cathedral is on one of the highest terraces above the town. The streets are still cobbled and filled with shops and pavement bars.
In the evening we went back to the lakeside to swim in one of the open-air pools we passed today. It is a large area with 2 swimming pools plus a diving pool and a children's pool. It also opens onto a private beach on the lake.
Supper was a pizza in a local restaurant. The food in Switzerland has been excellent, though pretty expensive.

We kept the rucksacks in the hotel all day, though surprisingly we walked more slowly without the weight. Tomorrow we will catch the bus out to Lutry and start from there.
