Langres to Culmont-Chalindrey

A walk by the lake

It was hot and with no breeze overnight and we didn't sleep well. Another early start to beat the heat and we were packed and on the road by 7.

Today's date: 9.8.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 39,640

Distance: 25.94 km

Climbing: 291 m

We stopped at a boulangerie and grabbed a coffee before leaving the City.

We descended down and out of Langres and then walked along the canal to Lac La Liez. There were various attractions on the north side of the lake including 4 bars but unfortunately none were open.

We walked through woods on the north shore. The path was easy to follow and we met lots of cyclists and a few runners. At the eastern end of the lake we stopped and had a picnic.

We filled our water bottles in the church at Lecey and set off for the shortish walk to our accomodation. Langres remained visible for most of the day.

Mrs Melezet remains the cow-whisperer. Herds of cows run to her then follow behind her. It happens all the time.

Our plan was to stop at 3 and sit out the heat but we stumbled upon an open bar in Culmont and the brief rest gave us the motivation to press on and we arrived at our B&B at 3.30.

Culmont-Chalindrey is not that pretty. It sprawls astride a major railway junction and has a very random mix of houses and styles.

Au pied du Cognolet

Cognolet is a hilltop fort but we cannot see it from our room. This is a classic B&B and we are the only guests. It is great to sit and relax in the late afternoon for a change.

Our host kindly booked us a table at the only restaurant open tonight. He must have seen our faces when he told us it was 2 km away and gave us a lift. The food is worth the walk home.

Tomorrow is a long stage, but we will make an early start. Tomorrow is Monday so definitely nothing open en-route.

Our progress

The little red dot. We have about 2 weeks left in France. We plan a rest day in Besancon, but otherwise are keen to get to Switzerland. Mainly because France is tough work but also because we don't want to get caught in any Covid restrictions that may be introduced.
