Filetto to Sarzana

I see the sea.

An early start and a long day. This should be the end of our descent of the valley and the start of our walk on the coastal plain.

Today's date: 22.9.20

Weather: rain showers am, with a sunny afternoon

Steps: 54,762

Distance: 37.79 km

Climbing: 851 m

It was a grey and misty day as we walked out of Filetto. We walked down to the river Magra and had breakfast in a bar before crossing the river. The road followed the river south and we climbed high above the valley. We made good time and there were great views of misty hills and mountains.

We stopped for a coffee in Barbarasco before crossing back across the river and into Aulla. The river was teeming with thousands of fish.

Aulla is a compact, slightly grey town and was very busy with schoolchildren. We found a nice bar with good food and had lunch.

The afternoon started with a tough climb up the last hill before the sea. The path wound around the mountain through dense woodland and it was easy to miss a turning. So we did, more than once.

We got our first view of the sea at about 25km into the day. It was possible to see ships at sea, inlets further north and the curve of the coastline to the south.

As we started to descend we lost sight of the coast but there was soon a distinctly Mediterranean feel - possibly because the loose dogs, olive groves, bad driving and rubbish dumped by the road reminded us of Greece.

The road unwound into a long descent into Sarzana and started to get busier. We entered Sarzana through Porta Parma.

Sarzana is a lively town with lots of shops and bars. We stopped for an ice cream and watched the shoppers.

Albergo La Viletta

A simple small hotel in the town centre. For supper we had trofie in the Piazza.
