Chalons en Champagne to Pogny

The Marne

A good rest and a slow walk into Chalons centre for breakfast.

Today we start another stretch of Via with limited accommodation so we are doing three stages in 2 days - but it should be better balanced with 25k each day.

Today's date: 27.7.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 34,950

Distance: 23.2 km

Climbing: 100m (est)

The centre of Chalons sits on the river Marne and there are some nice parks and meadows. They have an artificial beach and a giant skatepark.

Away from the river, Chalons is less pretty, though there are some characteristic houses and some nice squares. We got a stamp from the tourist office and a coffee on the square.

We left town along the river and walked for 5km in the shade before emerging into fields. We had our picnic in a patch of shade on the edge of a dusty field.

Occasionally the path was blocked by traffic.

It was the hottest day yet and we were glad when the via found its way back to the canal - there is usually one bank in shadow.

I managed to capture a butterfly on camera at last. There were people bathing in the river.

We stopped at the church in Saint Germain la Ville for water. There were 6 British graves, probably of a bomber crew. The oldest was 22.

Chambre 54. Airbnb

An old-style airbnb - we are most definitely in someone's home with all the quirkiness and random decoration that brings. It's a big house and they seem to rent out the rooms upstairs.

They have a dog and kitten, Lola and Happy.

Lola is very energetic. Happy, not so much.

We had a shower and were planning our evening when we realised that the only shop was closing in 14 minutes. A quick sprint to the other end of the village saved the day. Noodles and an apple for supper.
