Camaiore to Lucca

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

Fantastic.

Lucca is one of the highlights of the trip so we will stick closely to the via today to make sure we don't miss anything.

We had breakfast in Camaiore before following a quiet road out of town. Camaiore again seemed very civilised and liveable, with lots of people out and about and nice places to shop.

Today's date: 26.9.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 38,542

Distance: 27.11 km

Climbing: 484 m

The via ran on paths through woods and occasionally on the road for most of the day. The scenery was great, with villages sitting on the wooded hilltops.

We climbed the hill out of the valley and had a second coffee at a bar and bicycle shop in Montemagno. There were lots of cyclists out as it is the weekend.

We had a picnic from a shop in Bartoli before descending on a rocky path to pick up the road towards Lucca.

Roadside crosses made a reappearance today.

For the last few km into Lucca, the via runs along the river Serchio, with just a short walk through housing before you enter the city through Porta San Donato.

Lucca is really busy. There are a lot of tourists, despite the absence of Americans and Chinese, and some of the tiny streets are jammed with people.

Ostello dei Nobili - Lucca

A b&b near Piazza dell' Anfiteatro. We had supper in a nearby restaurant and then had a walk to get ice cream. The streets were busy and there are dozens of great looking restaurants. There was another thunderstorm just as we arrived home.

We are staying in Lucca tomorrow to explore.
