Badia a Isola to Siena

Monteriggione.

Today we go back out to Badia a Isola to complete our walk into Siena. We somehow missed the bus we were meant to catch but still managed to be on the Via by 9.30.

The morning was cool and misty and the path took us across muddy fields next to a forest. We could hear some excited dogs hunting in the woods and half expected to meet a deer or boar making their escape.

Today's date: 5.10.20

Weather: sunny but cool

Steps: 37,814

Distance: 24.46 km

Climbing: 640 m

We stopped at a bar in La Colonna before climbing the hill to Monteriggione castle. There is a village inside the walls and we stopped for a sandwich. There were a number of other walkers and people touring on bicycles in the main square.

The Via ran through woods and fields all afternoon. The paths were muddy and filled with puddles the size of ponds, but there were lots of chanes of scene and things to look at.

Late in the afternoon we met two pilgrims with a dog, all headed to Rome.

The path ran on through woodland on slippery and rocky paths that were treacherous and tough on the feet.

The Via winds towards Siena without giving you a view of the city until you are very close. It does a good job of avoiding the factories and supermarkets that normally mark the entrance to a city, and we walked just a few hundred meters along the main road before entering through Porta Camolia.

Our last night. We had a picnic indoors to use up all the food we bought at the wekend.
