Arrigny to Chavanges

Wooden Churches

A disturbed night and a slow start to a hot day. Our plan was to get to Chavanges, the only place around with any facilities.

We packed the baguettes we had ordered from the campsite and set off.

Today's date: 30.7.20

Weather: sunny and hot

Steps: 34,200

Distance: 23.09 km

Climbing: 105 m

The first few km were on a cycle path along the lake. There was no shade but the lake was really interesting with lots of wildlife.

We left the lake and walked through a series of villages that were notable for their wooden churches.

We stopped at Chatillon sur Broue for water from the church. Unusually, every church today was unlocked.

There were lots of crosses by the roadside today.

We rested for an hour in Outines. It is a fantastically pretty village with timber framed houses and a church on the green. We ate our baguettes and some leftovers from a couple of days ago.

We walked on in the sun for the rest of the afternoon. The agriculture all day was very mixed with the usual wheat, corn and sunflower fields plus a lot of cattle being raised for beef.

Mrs M facinates cows - they run across fields to see her.

As we approached Chavanges I took a picture of the church. Just out of shot to the left, men were working on a pylon.

Chavanges was a big disappointment. The restaurant, bakery and bars were all shut. When we reached our b&b all was explained - no power in the village as a tractor had struck a pylon.

Le Gilliard b&b - Chavanges

A simple modern b&b. The power came back after a couple of hours and we could charge phones. The village shop provided picnic food which we ate in the room - it is still really hot outside.
