Altopascio to San Miniato

Hills.

Today we cross the river Arno and end the day in a Tuscan hilltop village.

It was cold again as we headed out of the b&b, fuelled by a big, sugary breakfast.

We walked through woodland, sharing the trail with dozens of mountain bikers and stopped in Galleno for breakfast 2.

Today's date: 29.9.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 37,846

Distance: 27.75 km

Climbing: 404 m

We crossed a canal over the fortified bridge at Ponte Cappiano and walked along the canal to Fucecchio. The canal was home to lots of turtles which swam around slowly with their heads clear of the muddy water.

We stopped for lunch on the way into Fucecchio. It was a popular place with good food and we had a nice spot in the sun.

Fucecchio is an odd place. The via climbed to the village centre on top of the hill. It was pretty run-down, with lots of properties for sale. We then descended to a newer shopping area which seemed much larger than the village needed.

The road from town crosses the Arno and we made good time along the river bank to San Miniato Basso where we had a very fancy tea.

San Miniato sits on a hill with great views over the plain of the river Arno. We climbed the hill to the village and explored. The village has narrow streets with each house backing onto a slope and having a great view. It was a great place to visit, but I'm not sure it is very liveable and suspect it gets very busy with tourists.

Agriturismo Marrucola

About 2k out of town. It was a really pleasant walk out of the village in the evening light.

Our accommodation is on a large farm that seems to do lots of different things. The room is a bit dated, but there is a restaurant which is a bonus. We had a vegetable soup which was exactly what we needed. Staying in an agriturismo seems a better choice than hostels at the moment. Just as cheap, but more comfortable.
