Aigle to Vernayaz

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

Saint-Maurice and a Spa

It was cool again overnight and we sense a change in the weather so decided to press on over the next few days to clear the mountains.

Having set ourselves a long day, we immediately pottered about Aigle for a couple of hours. We had 2 breakfasts and had a good look around. It isn't a pretty town, but it has lots going on. It was also due to host the cycling world championship next month. They are cancelled but there are still lots of cycling references everywhere.

Mrs M bought me a souvenir bottle which I will doubtless lose in days.

Today's date: 25.8.20

Weather: cloudy with sunny spells

Steps: 41,850

Distance: 30.94 km

Climbing: 880 m ( according to Garmin - seems wrong)

All day we were walking either by the river or by a railway. The walking was easy, mostly on cycle paths. There were vineyards on the hills and lots of fruit farms and stables.

We had lunch at a small restaurant in Massongex. It makes such a difference to find places open during the day.

The valley narrows at Saint-Maurice which is another attractive town. We stopped for a tea and decided that we had time to visit the local thermal baths at Lavey.

The baths are a complex of 4 or 5 warm pools, some covered, with jacuzzis and the like. They were very busy and not that relaxing, though we did emerge feeling very clean.

The last few km to our accomodation were along the river again. The river here looks calm but flows really fast and is moving a lot of water. We could see Martigny and the real start of the climb, and there are signs for the pass. A bit exciting, a bit daunting.

Reves Hotellerie - Vernayaz

We arrived at Vernayaz at 8pm. It is a strange town with an odd mix of houses. Our accomodation is a b&b with a number of rooms. We are the only guests and the owner is not here - we were given a code to let ourselves in.

Leftovers and allsorts for supper. We are getting very weight-conscious as we approach the Alps and are trying to use up or finish everything we don't need.
