Lake Bolsena.
A relaxed day ahead as we walk the short distance to Lake Bolsena which is a large freshwater lake formed in the cone of a long-extinct volcano.
Today's date: 10.10.20
Weather: sunny
Steps: 38,758
Distance: 27.51 km
Climbing: 373 m
We left the hotel early and grabbed breakfast. There seemed to be no other hikers around though we met 2 later in the day.
The Via took a particularly random course all day, and the morning was a bit dull as we looped around fields.
We stopped for a sandwich in San Lorenzo Nuovo which had a number of bars and a broad Piazza.
Immediately after leaving San Lorenzo Nuovo you get your first view of the lake. It is a huge lake, about 12 km in diameter, with fields rather than buildings on the shoreline. There were a few sailboats, but no other vessels visible.
The path took us few woods and fields around the lake until we arrived at Bolsena. The town has a lakeside area which we have not seen, and a medieval part full of charm. We had tea in one of the small squares.
Convento Santa Maria del Giglio
A convent. It is, of course, high on the hill above the town - we look down on the castle. It is a grand old building and seems quite busy. For supper we walked back down the hill for pasta e fagioli.
